  Richard Adams's remarkable debut novel of a band of rabbits in the English countryside fleeing their warren to escape its destruction was published in Britain in 1973 and in the United States and the rest of the world shortly thereafter. It immediately went to the top of The New York Times best seller list, remaining there for thirteen weeks. An animated film based on the novel was released in 1978.

  The Plague Dogs, Richard Adams's follow up novel to Watership Down, tracks Rowf, a black Labrador, born in a secret experimental government lab in the North of England, and Snitter, a fox terrier placed in the lab after the accidental death of his master on their escape from the institution. The rumor that they were being used study Plague causes an uproar, followed by a nationwide pursuit by the military to "eliminate the problem".
